Gang violence in Haiti has directly targeted the nation's sports infrastructure, damaging facilities central to football development. The security crisis, which has displaced over a million people internally over the last six years, has affected every sector of national life, including sport. Football holds a unique place as a passion for almost all ages and social groups in the country.

Football facilities have not been spared from widespread looting and arson. The FIFA Goal Center in Croix-des-Bouquets, which trained stars like Melchie Dumornay and Nérilia Mondésir, was attacked, looted, and burned by the 400 Mawozo gang led by Wilson Joseph.

Attacks on National Sports Venues

Major national sports centers have suffered significant gang attacks. The Sylvio Cator Stadium in southern Port-au-Prince, the home of Haitian national football, was attacked in February 2024. The area around it is controlled by gangs led by Renel Destina and Johnson André. The Haitian Olympic Center in Croix-des-Missions, a training site for many young athletes, was attacked in February 2026. That area is controlled by Claudy Célestin of the Chen Mechan gang and Jeff Larose of the Taliban gang.

Because criminal gangs control the main roads, the regular national football championship has halted. The national league has been forced to organize a special competition so players can keep playing. Many sports parks are located in gang-controlled areas, which exacerbates the situation.

Football as a Unifying Force

Despite the violence, football continues to create social cohesion. People from all classes come together on the field. The national team selection process is based solely on talent, representing all social categories. This unifying power was evident when the senior national team, the Grenadiers, qualified for the 2026 World Cup on November 18, 2025, bringing joy to the population.

The sport's hopeful future is most visible in youth achievements. The Haitian U14 team recently won the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U14 Challenge Series, which ended on August 23 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. They became Division 1 champions.

This victory marked Haiti’s third CFU U14 title, following previous wins in 2021 and 2022. All three titles were secured during the national crisis. To help participation, the Haitian Football Federation (FHF) organized a talent detection tournament and a two-month preparation camp at the Dulaire Sports Complex in Ouanaminthe.

Official Commitments and Ongoing Threats

The young champions returned to a welcome reception at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport on August 24, organized by the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Civic Action (MJSAC). Minister Phytagore Dumas highlighted individual performances, including Jerry Petit-Homme's goal scored within four or five seconds against the Dominican Republic. Minister Dumas stated his commitment to supporting the young players in their education and personal growth.

The Haitian Football Federation echoed this sentiment. In a statement, they said the event was to "show them love and support, and to renew our commitment to keep fighting to raise the level of football in the country and secure the future."

Yet, celebrations are curtailed by persistent violence. On the night of August 24, fewer than 24 hours after the U14 victory, armed gangs from the criminal group Viv Ansanm killed around 47 people and kidnapped more than 30 others in the municipality of Kenscoff. Haiti's U17 national team continues its preparation for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar at Parc Sainte-Claire in Delmas, while the U20 team has qualified for the men’s football tournament of the 2027 Pan American Games.
